COBRA 10 Ruthin 19

Ruthin were away to COBRA in Division 1 North on Saturday and with both sides having started the season with a win the match was set up to be a competitive affair.  It was a game of strong defences and although both sides can play fast open rugby virtually every attacking move from either side was stifled out before the whitewash was reached.   COBRA went ahead after 10 minutes with a penalty goal but they then conceded 4 first half penalty goals themselves, all kicked by fly half Callum Bennett, as they tried to contain the Blues attack.  COBRA were very much in the game and although their backs attempted to run through Blues defence but it held solid and penalty goals made up the 12-3 advantage that the Blues had at the break.  The second half started with a sustained COBRA attack but the visitors withstood this and then turned the tables to take the game to the home side.  COBRA’s defence was ferocious and the repeatedly knocked the blues back from scrums and lineouts a few yards from their line.  Eventually the pressure told and centre Harri Morgan forced his way through the home defence to score between the posts with Bennett adding the conversion.  With the score at 19-3 to Ruthin and around 20 minutes to go it was COBRA’s turn to go on the offensive.  Initially the Blues defence held but after going down to 14 men because of a high tackle sin-bin, COBRA took advantage of the extra man to break through the defence for a converted try.  Although both sides had chances in the last 10 minutes, defences were again dominant and there was no further score with the Blues winning 19-10.
