Ruthin 34 Caernarfon 22

Ruthin played Caernarfon in an entertaining first Division 1 North game of the season at Caeddol on Saturday. With both teams competing for the full 80 minutes Ruthin had to wait until the last five minutes of the game to secure the win.  First points went to Ruthin with a penalty goal by centre Shay Owen.  Caernarfon missed some opportunities to even up the points with penalty goal kicks but eventually went ahead after 20 minutes with pushover try.  The Blues responded with a nice break by flanker Tudur Parry into the Coffi’s 22 and the ball was recycled out to centre Harri Morgan who flicked it to wing Josh Wilson for a fine try converted by fly half Callum Bennett.  Almost immediately the visitors reapplied the pressure on the Blues line and equalised the points with an unconverted try.  Again Ruthin went ahead with a try by Tudur Parry converted by Bennett after some great play by the home side.  Play oscillated from end to end with no further score for the remainder of the half and Ruthin went in 17-10 at the break.  The Blues started the second half strongly with a penalty goal by Bennett putting them 10 points clear of the visitors but after a Ruthin player was sin-binned the visitors bagged another try and then a further converted try.  With the Coffis now 22-20 ahead and with a try bonus point and only 10 minutes to go the Blues had to gather all their resources to regain the lead.  Caernarfon were tenacious in holding on to their lead but the break came when full back Kyle Davies picked up the ball in Ruthin’s 22 and ran the length of the pitch and offloaded to Wilson who went over the whitewash with Bennett converting.  With 5 minutes to go the Blues then camped in the Coffis 22 with pressure finally paying off with a try by replacement Cai Edwards.  At 34-22 to the Blues the whistle blew with a well-earned but hard fought bonus point win.
