Ruthin 46 Bro Ffestiniog 11

Ruthin continued their good start to the season with a convincing win over Bro Ffestiniog at Caeddol on Saturday.  Bro were the first to get points on the board with 2 penalty goals kicked by fly half Matthew Williams within 10 minutes of the start.  But Blues fly half Callum Bennett put the home side ahead with a converted try followed by a penalty goal.  Bennett then broke through Bro’s defence and offloaded to captain Chris Davies who went over the whitewash.   Ruthin were playing good rugby at this stage and another try followed when centre Shay Owen weaved up field and offloaded to wing Josh Wilson for his first try converted by Bennett.  At 22-6 down the visitors reduced the arrears with a try by Huw Parry but the gap widened again when Ruthin’s winger, also Huw Parry, bagged the Blues bonus point try.  Owen then finished the half off with a great try of his own also converted by Bennett and the teams went in for the break with Ruthin 34-11 ahead.  For the first 20 minutes of the second half the Blues defence was severely tested as the visitors tried to get over the try line.  Ruthin’s defence held but the pressure wasn’t released until Wilson intercepted a ball in his own half and broke away upfield for his second try converted by Bennett.  Wilson’s hat trick try came shortly afterwards and although the visitors fought until the end of the match they were unable to reduce the arrears and the whistle blew for full time with Ruthin winning 46-11.
