Llandudno 18 Ruthin 20

Ruthin bounced back from their Swalec Plate defeat at Dolgellau with a hard fought win at Llandudno who were promoted from Division 2 North at the end of last season.  The Blues started the match playing against a brisk and gusty wind and were 5-0 down in the first five minutes as the home side came at them at full pelt and scrum half Tom Hocknell went over the whitewash. The arrears were reduced with a well struck penalty goal from fly half Callum Bennett but Blues were unable to capitalise further on some good play often let down in good positions by conceding penalties.  The home side went further ahead with a penalty by fly half Luke Jones and then Ruthin had to muster all of their defensive skills to counter the Llandudno attack.  The Blues went down to 14 men with a sin bin and although they defended well against a thrusting attack they eventually conceded an unconverted try by wing Huw Griffiths.   Llandudno were 13-3 ahead at half time. The Blues began to erode away at the Llandudno lead first with penalty goal by Bennett and then with a well worked try by flanker Tudur Parry which Bennett converted.  The scores were now level at 13-13 and the pace of the game was raised as both sides tried to gain advantage.  It was the Blues that edged ahead after the ball was passed out to wing Josh Wilson who jigged past a couple of players and sped upfield to score with Bennett converting.  Llandudno were still in the game however and after another penalty against Ruthin  which put them back in the visitor's half they got a third try after some good attacking play.  A difficult conversion attempt went wide and the whistle blew for full time with the Blues winning 20-18.
