Dolgellau 22 Ruthin 8

Having lost away to Dolgellau in the last two seasons Ruthin were looking to redress the situation in this Swalec Plate encounter on Saturday.   However it was not to be and the home side came away with a 22-8 win after a scrappy game with mistakes made on both sides.  Dolgellau missed two penalty goal kicks before full back Shay Owen kicked a penalty goal for the Blues from the half way line rather against the run of play.  The penalties kept coming on both sides and Dolgellau went down to 14 men when one of their wingers was sin-binned.  The Blues could not capitalise on the extra man and in fact it was the home side that went ahead from a converted pushover try from a scrum on Ruthin’s 22.  The Blues responded and played their best rugby up to half time but couldn’t break through a dogged Dolgellau defence despite having a try disallowed because the referee was unsighted.  The home side came out after the break 7-3 ahead and went further ahead with a penalty goal.  Again The Blues tried to break through but to no avail and lost a man to a yellow card Dolgellau took advantage and kicked across field for the ball to be collected by the winger who ran upfield and scored.  The teams were evened up when the home side got a second yellow card.  But the Blues were still conceding penalties and after the third in quick succession Dolgellau drove over from the resulting lineout 5yds out for a converted try.  The Blues got a consolation try when centre Harri Morgan forced his way along the wing in a good solo effort but it was all too late and the whistle blew with no further score.  With over 20 penalties conceded between the two sides this was a game which Ruthin at least would prefer to forget.
