Ruthin 43 Mold 29

In their first defence of the North Wales Cup Ruthin had work hard to come away with a win against a competent and spirited Mold side.  The visitors were straight into the Blues 22 with effective driving mauls which the home side managed to defend but conceded a penalty goal which Jack Martin kicked.  The visitors kept up the pressure until Ruthin broke from defence and flanker Ben Taylor went over for a try which fly half Callum Bennett converted. Within a few minutes Ruthin scored another try when, from a Blues lineout inside Mold’s 22, centres Harry Morgan and Gethin Hughes combined for Hughes to go over the whitewash with Bennett converting.  The Blues kept up the pressure and from a Ruthin turnover, orchestrated by captain Chris Davies, scrum half Will Mitchelmore offloaded to Morgan for the Blues 3rd try.  At 19-3 ahead one might have expected the Mold heads to go down but the opposite was the case and they launched themselves back into the home sides 22 and drove over for a try which Martin converted.  Ruthin then had to defend desperately to prevent Mold’s forwards driving over again.  Eventually they cleared their lines and there was no further score before half time.  After the break Ruthin widened the gap again with a converted try from Hughes but the Blues could not draw away from a dogged Mold side.  The home side went down to 14 men with a sin bin and the visitors put on another 12 points with 2 tries, one converted, narrowing the gap to 26-22 to Ruthin.  The Blues had to up their game to secure a win and Morgan forced his way across the try line again for another converted try but again the visitors came back with a converted try.  At 33-29 to Ruthin with 10 minutes to go the game could have gone either way but after a lineout on Mold’s 22 the ball was swung across field to wing Josh Wilson to go over for a try and then in the last minutes of the game some good phase play by the Blues fed Wilson again for his second try and the whistle blew for full time with the score 43-29 to Ruthin.
